Chess, #287

Please note that this letter is in-process; the following are my notes

Dear Adam,
***
From the movie "Searching for Bobby Fischer" (at 1:30 into the movie), about Josh Waitzkin, a kid who became a chess master. Used to played speed chess in Washington Square Park in NY with adults. In one scene, he is in a contest, where one of his adult playing partners is watching a remote video of a game Josh is playing. He notices what's on the horizon and says "There it is" "Go!", Yes!" Go"

"Josh Waitzkin is just a typical American boy interested in baseball when one day he challenges his father at chess and wins. Showing unusual precocity at the outdoor matches at Washington Square in New York City, he quickly makes friends with a hustler named Vinnie who teaches him speed chess. Josh's parents hire a renowned chess coach, Bruce, who teaches Josh the usefulness of measured planning. Along the way Josh becomes tired of Bruce's system and chess in general and purposely throws a match, leaving the prospects of winning a national championship in serious jeopardy."

.............................................
In Washington Square Park (1:21:09)
Vinnie: What's that?
Josh Waitzkin: Schliemann attack.
Vinnie: Schliemann attack? Where'd you learn that from, a book?
Josh Waitzkin: No, my teacher taught me.
Vinnie: Oh, your teacher. Well, forget it. Play like you used to, from the gut. Get your pawns rolling on the queen's side. Come and get me.
.............................................
(1:22) Vinnie: He didn't teach you how to win, he taught you how not to lose. That's nothing to be proud of. You're playing not to lose, Josh. You've got to risk losing. You've got to risk everything. You've got to go to the edge of defeat. That's where you want to be, boy - on the edge of defeat.
Josh Waitzkin: But...
Vinnie: But what? Play. Never play the board, always the man. You've gotta play the man *playing* the board. Play *me*. I'm your opponent, you have to beat *me*. Not the board, beat *me*.
.............................................
(1:37) Vinnie: "There it is!"
(1:38) Bruce Pandolfini (Ben Kinglsey) - Look deep, Josh. It's there. It's twelve moves away, but it's there. You've got him.
(1:38:57) Bruce: Don't move until you see it."
(1:39:50) Bruce: He's got it!"
(1:40) Josh: I'm offering you a draw."
Draw? You've go to be kidding."
Josh: You've lost. You just don't know it."
I've lost? Look at the board."
Josh: I have.... Take the draw. And we'll share the championship....Take the draw."
Move!
